Jamaicas average supply of calories for food consumption has been normalised by the average dietary energy requirement estimated for its population to provide an index of adequacy of the food supply in terms of calories. They had to encourage exclusive breast feeding; improve weaning practices; encourage a more balanced and affordable family diet by reducing the reliance on imported foods and increase the use of home-grown alternatives; and increase regular attendance at clinics so that childrens weight could be monitored and at-risk cases be given supplements (Riley, 2005, p. 180; Marchione, 1984).
