The first book was first published in 2008 and in 2020 all the books were re-released in a special edition hardcover. And so the characters in the story cant see a good end to their story, and then you as the reader are in the same boat, because youre reading it and going, How in the world is this going to work out?. This was my first attempt at writing, so I can look back and see myself slowly figuring out how it worked as the books were written. I think thats utterly delightful. Jake Meador: So this was another thing, and you kind of touched on it a little bit in your letter to parents on the website, but it struck me as I was reading that theres a lot of darkness and evil and pain in these stories. Just like the orphaned farmboy in Belgariad, to live a lonely life like Drizzt, always caught between two worlds like Tanis Half-Elven. Jake Meador: And she just burst out laughing. I remember feeling like the story found its legs, like something was really happening, because now Janner is isolated, hes got to make his own decisions. So, anyway, I think that back then, the idea of receiving a new name from Christ was part of what was at the root of that idea that Tink was the metaphor that was playing out was that Tink was afraid of being a king, he didnt want to be, so the name became a very tangible way to convey that idea. Jake Meador: Well and even after Gnag is gone, theres Fangs that are like, We dont know what were supposed to do now., Jake Meador: Weve just been evil for so long, and, Jake Meador: When I was reading that to Davy Joy my wife was in the kitchen and overheard the part where one of the one Fangs is like, What if we like being evil?. Lovlies to you if you recognize that. Its a series of four fantasy-adventure novels about the three Igiby children, Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli. Jake Meador: I had been reading the whole series without realizing it and then I got there and was like, huh, thats actually a huge plot problem., Andrew Peterson: Yeah, well, okay, so thats a good example of what were talking about. And in a world that were living in now, with COVID, and riots, and everything else, I sometimes cannot see a good way for this to end. And so it kind of makes the parents look like knuckleheads. But for me, I would say that I wasnt reading the classics, I didnt have anything close to a classical education, but the Bible was always there. Andrew Peterson: If I compare that to that scene in Return of the Jedi when the Emperor and Luke are having their final showdown, and Luke is looking out the window and he sees the battle happening a long way away, and you know that Han Solo and Lando and theyre all fighting, and you love these characters. Andrew Peterson: And so, my imagination is often where, if I go dark, its because I begin to believe something about myself that isnt true, and its because Im listening to the voice of the enemy and not the voice of the Father. Besides, all things are of God; and, therefore, why should it not be lawful to dedicate to his glory everything that can properly be employed for such a purpose? Your kids will never admit it but Wingfeather helps readers see family clearer, not dimmer and homework brighter, not duller. And so, I think that happens at a deeper theological level, when it comes to naming humans. And then when the new ones came out, not the Disney sequels but the prequels, the space battles were much more impressive, more amazing than the ones in the original trilogy, but it didnt work because nobody cared about who was flying the spaceship. It doesnt do anybody any good to make a straw man out of evil. Tolkien argued that the incarnation of Jesus was the eucatastrophe of creations story, and that if you zoom in on the incarnation, on Jesuss life, the Resurrection is the eucatastrophe of Jesuss story. It was getting to the bottom of things. The Wingfeather Saga tells the story of the Igiby family and especially their three children: Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli. "Janner." Were over halfway through the fourth book, and Im already dreading the ending, which I will not be able to get through without coming unglued. But then as I was reading the Wingfeather books, I thought back to that again, and I thought that they maybe werent getting your work quite right. Please? Without spoiling the book, a big part of Janners journey is seeing his role in the bigger story. He is stuck in this backward village called Glipwood. And so I read constantly, I read all those books, tons of sci-fi stuff. Artham Wingfeather had dreaded this day. You see what Nias greatest fears are, and she has to also confront those. Great interview questions and discussion. Andrew Peterson: I mostly hated it. After helping free Janner, she was put in the coffin again. So buckle up and listen to how they save Sara and Janner! I cried when they found each other, and then Artham realized they were flying and spinning in the air. Footnote. After the Wingfeather War ends, many of the members of her crew were able to return to their homes, but Sara was not one of them. I remember just letting my imagination run wild, and thinking up Gnag the Nameless as a funny kind of name for a villain but you cant stop there; you have to figure out why hes named Gnag the Nameless, and so, I have these documents that I was writing before I started book one, where it was kind of like an archeological dig, trying to figure out why somebody would be named Gnag the Nameless, and why would he want to destroy the world. Andrew Peterson: At the expense of what couldve been a good story! Im going to first make a broad argument, then the narrow one. Frankles cute! The theological core is Christian. That was when Derek was doing Mockingbird, and those kind of things, and I remember tracking with it at the time. After helping free Janner, she was put in the coffin again. The Green Ember can be read to 5 year olds whereas Wingfeather is really for older children. But those are few and far between, in my experience. Readers become non-readers, non-readers turn to readers. Are you two familiar with Petersons recent Kickstarter? And so, that also extended to the villains. Andrew Peterson: But also there was just a greater familiarity with scripture. Hes just had to kind of compartmentalize that, almost. Talk about having an agenda. Jake Meador: Over real darkness, not the kind of stuff thats minimized or undersold. But they don't really have any real motivations, desires, regrets, failures, stuff that makes them tick, real struggles, interesting relationships, negative emotions, and layers. And even if that means changing our lives, thats what were called to do. Three Honoured and Great Subjects: Word, Form, and Song. But at no point did I care about the characters. So I wanted to let you know, in case youre wary of these books, Im not one of those writers churning out stories for money, or to push a political agenda, and Im not writing fantasy just because I have a thing for swords and dragons, and I dont want to corrupt your kids with shady philosophy or trick them into practicing witchcraft. But other than that, yes!!!!!!!!! This is my spoiler-free review of the Wingfeather Saga, by that I mean, this review covers the same material in the 15 minute animated short, which itself is a teaser for the eventual full series. Sara was very sad and wept about the news of Janner's death, and is adopted by Nia Igiby, Janner's mother. Andrew Peterson: I was waking up to writers like Wendell Berry, and Walt Wangerin Jr., and. No dreams and visions of God or from God. I wanted to make it so that these werent just chess pieces moving across the board, but that you actually felt like something was at stake, on the inside. But the point is I read any story that felt like it would take me out of where I was, and allowed me to explore some other place. He had one job. The problem was theyre also filthy. And yet, youre able to convey aspects of what drives them and what motivates them through their actions, and we do get these glimmers into what theyre afraid of, what they care about. Andrew Peterson: The Lord of the Rings to me is a combination of the two. Havent you heard, the book of Acts has not ended because we are still living in it? Andrew Peterson: So, in this story, I wanted to make the parents actual parents, who actually loved and liked their kids. There is an epic story. The whole movie felt like a cardboard cutout of a story that was an excuse for a whole bunch of cool special effects and concepts. RUDRICK AND NIA SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN MARRIED AND HAD A LITTLE GIRL NAMED MADYA AND SARAH COBBLER IS NOW HEARTBROKEN! Does that make sense? Andrew Peterson:Yeah. Andrew Peterson: And it doesnt mean that they dont misunderstand each other, but theyre also present. Gammon, I want you to be in the back of the group. Janner, the eldest, is about to discover that the ordinary little town where they live is anything but ordinary. But those are, in many ways, fantasy novels, too. But. And eucatastrophe, which means good catastrophe, is a way of awakening us to hope and longing. Andrew Peterson: They make these small decisions, and then for the next five episodes you see the outflow of the sin that created this situation. *now sneaks away without reading anything else because I havent finished the series and dont want to read spoilers.*. Shaper. Andrew Peterson: But a character like Gnag the Nameless, who has not yet transformed, hes still got this spark of humanity in him, so I needed there to be some real reason for it.
